Flax cultivation

Flax cultivation is an almost forgotten crop on Texel. In the Middle Ages, flax was grown and processed on Texel. Until the 18th century there were spinners and specialized wool and linen weavers on the island. The Weverstraat in Den Burg still reminds of that.

Linen, linen cloth, was processed into bed linen and undergarments. Then the linen weavers disappeared with the flax from Texel. With the arrival of Zeeland farmers in the newly diked polder Eierland, flax reappeared on Texel in 1838. When the massive import of cotton then started, flax cultivation on Texel came to an end.
